POWER PLANTS TO ASSEMBLY LINES:

FLUOR DANIEL IS HELPING TO BUILD INDONESIA’S FUTURE

A barren beachfront on the Java Sea. The jungles of Sumatra. The bustling heart of the Indonesian capital. Worlds apart, but all part of the world of Fluor Daniel.

Over the past 25 years, this international construction giant has carved out a reputation for innovative and flexible approaches to engineering, construction and related services through a host of prestigious projects across the archipelago.

The petroleum industry is the one which most often comes to mind when the name Fluor Daniel is mentioned. The company’s close association with Pertamina and a host of multinational oil companies in Indonesia dates back to 1970.

But with experience has come diversity. These days, Fluor Daniel engineers are as likely to be building a hotel as constructing a refinery.

Jakarta’s Grand Old Lady

The Hotel Borobudur Inter-Continental is a Jakarta landmark. Located just around the corner from Pertamina’s headquarters, the hotel has been closely associated with the growth of Indonesia’s oil sector. OPEC oil ministers and the heads of some of the world’s largest petroleum companies have graced its grand lobby.

Given Fluor Daniel’s close association with the Indonesian petroleum industry, it is appropriate that the construction giant has been chosen to give the 19-story complex a major facelift.

"The renovation is not a simple ‘wallpaper and carpet’ project," says Rod Ragan, Vice President of Fluor Daniel Indonesia. "Major structural demolition and renovation will be undertaken, including the replacement of virtually all mechanical, electrical, control and hydraulic services."

From a major expansion and redesign of the hotel’s familiar lobby, to new kitchens and health club, refinished guests rooms, and even the addition of new tennis courts and landscaping, the Borobudur renovation is designed to ensure the hotel maintains its place as the capital’s business and social crossroads.

Helping Power National Growth

Three hours outside Surabaya, on a sandy stretch of seafront, Indonesia’s first privately-owned and operated power plant is slowly taking form.

Paiton Swasta I marks a new direction in the Indonesian power industry, one which will help power the nation’s economic expansion well into the next century.

Responsibility for engineering and construction of Paiton’s critical power block rests with Duke/Fluor Daniel, an operating entity of the global engineering, construction and diversified services company.

"Our selection by the Paiton partners -- Mitsui, Mission Energy, General Electric and Batu Hitam Perkasa -- is an example of the strength of long-term relationships forged on projects around the world," explains Ragan.

Meanwhile in West Java, Fluor Daniel’s involvement in Unocal Geothermal’s new steam driven power plant demonstrates that Fluor Daniel’s expertise extends far beyond traditional coal-fired technology.

The contract, for engineering and procurement on the new plant, located near Bogor, builds on a relationship the two companies forged in Indonesia back in 1976, when Fluor Daniel provided Unocal Indonesia with similar services on a crude stabilization plant.

Automating For The Future

In recent years, Indonesia’s manufacturing sector has exploded. Some of the world’s biggest corporate names now assemble their products in the archipelago.

Those companies are increasingly turning to Fluor Daniel to put the infrastructure in place.

When General Motors upgraded its assembly line for the manufacture of its new Opel Blazer, the job of redesigning and reengineering the assembly line was entrusted to Fluor Daniel -- which originally engineered the Opel assembly line in 1993.

Likewise, McCormick Spices recently called on Fluor Daniel for help for its new spice manufacturing facility.

"We pride ourselves on our flexibility," says Charlie Sands, president of Fluor Daniel Indonesia. "We evaluate each job looking for the unique combination of services and expertise required by the client -- whether that is engineering, procurement or construction management."

Sometimes, "hands-on" involvement in all three areas of expertise is needed. Other times, clients turn to Fluor Daniel to act as their "eyes and ears" on a project, representing their interests in what might be a new area of investment.

In all cases, the Fluor Daniel team draws not only on the international expertise resulting from countless projects around the world, but also the local insight developed in 25 years of experience on the ground in Indonesia.
